Rebel Wilson Discovers Fatphobia

In an interview with Australian morning radio show T he Morning Crew with Hughesy, E d and Erin, actor Rebel Wilson admits that people treat her differently since losing weight. The “Pitch Perfect” actor, who lost 60 pounds, was surprised to find out how people treat her now that she’s thinner. “Sometimes being bigger, people didn’t necessarily look twice at you. Now that I’m in good shape, people offer to carry my groceries to the car and hold doors open for you. I’m like, ‘is this what other people experienced all the time?’” Wilson was dismayed by how many people were interested in her weight loss, considering “there’s so much going on in the world.” What’s surprising about this story is how Wilson recently recognizes fatphobia exists. Anyone who has lost weight can confirm that yes, people don’t treat you the same. Also, Wilson is an actor, one of the most challenging professions for anyone who isn’t considered classically attractive or thin. It may hurt to realize people are nicer to people who are thin, but it’s not shocking.
Now that Wilson made this discovery, will she use her platform to dismantle fatphobia or contribute to it?
