The Plus Size Movement Hits Japan
The plus-size model movement is booming in the U.K and U.S., and is taking over Japan via one groundbreaking magazine . La Farfa , Japan's only plus-size magazine, hit newsstands in 2014 and created a new term to describe the women featured in the mag. Rather than referring to plus-size women as the derogatory name Debu (fatty), the staff at La Farfa uses the term "marshmallow girls." The magazine and new term has given young women in Japan who felt out of place a new sense of pride. Two top plus-size models, Aisha and Nao, are featured in a video on BBC Asia about the movement.
