Plus Size Representation at Spring 2018 NYFW Takes a Dive
Although fewer designers produced shows this month at New York Fashion Week, the number of plus size models hired to walk for labels showing its Spring 2018 collections decreased from past NYFW seasons, according to The Fashion Spot.
During the Fall 2018 shows, 26 plus-size models walked in 8 New York shows (that's 1.1 percent of all castings). By comparison, at NYFW for Spring 2018, 34 plus size models walked various shows. This is the first time since Fall 2016 that the number of plus-size model bookings regressed.
Among the designers who didn't show at the Fall 2018 shows were Torrid and Addition Elle, labels who hire plus size models. However, the presence of plus size models at Christian Siriano and Chromat shows during Fashion Week is now standard practice.
Of the 26 plus size models this season, The Fashion Spot noted there were 19 women of color and among the 7 white models, one was over the age of 50.
