It's Not You, It's Them: M.M. LaFleur Downsizes its Plus Size Line

Today, Retail Dive reported that clothing line M.M. LaFleur would no longer continue to make plus size options for its customers.

While there will be no further plus-size options for shoppers, M.M. LaFleur will continue to stock its existing line in extended sizes and update color and fabric options. More recently, the label added 14 new plus-size options to its spring collection.

"The truth is that we’ve been struggling to sell enough of our plus-size clothing to offset the cost of producing it,” the company wrote in an email sent to its customers. “Rather than sacrifice quality to develop new styles, we’ve chosen to focus on releasing tried-and-true silhouettes in new colors and fabrics for now.”

Insiders have called M.M. LaFleur’s letter to customers about scaling back its plus-size line frank and transparent. Others have called out the company for its lack of transparency of its plus-size range on its site and general web searches. (Stylist Kat Eves has a comprehensive take on the retailer’s approach to its plus-size line in her Twitter feed.

On Monday, the founders of M.M. LaFleur were featured in New York magazine’s “The Cut” in its “How I Get It Done” column. The title? “The Women Who Want to Change the Way You Dress for Work."

Well, not all women.
